  • The composer of the week in Alla Breve is another composer who has been programmed this season at the Festival Présences. The composer is Ramon Lazkano. For our Alla Breve in the past, he devised a piece of music for two pianists and two percussionists called ‘Laiotz’.

‘Laiotz’ for two pianos and two percussionists by Ramon Lazkano

Performed by the Ykeda duo: Patrick Zygmanowski, and Tamayo Ikeda, pianos

Florent Jodelet and François Desforges, percussion

Replay of the premiere recorded in September 2004 at Radio France

    Piece n°2

Today, the performers of Ramon Lazkano's five Laiotz open the second page of his ‘Terres Ombragées’ (or Laiotz in Basque).

What's striking about these pieces is that there's something incantatory and gripping about them. This is not only true of the odd-numbered, more extrovert movements. It's also very present in the more nocturnal, shadier even-numbered movements.

The second of Ramon Lazkano's Laiotz recalls a madrigal by Gesualdo, but the Laiotz also conceal another reference, that of Bartok and the sonata he imagined for the same instrumentarium.
